# Your own server

> Run agents on a dev box or server and pick them up from any SSH login or your phone.

Agents often run for a long time, and a machine that's always on is a good place for them: a desktop
at home, a VPS (Hetzner, DigitalOcean, …) or a cloud VM. Any macOS or Linux x64 machine you can SSH
into works. Rakumux runs there like it does locally, and because the background server owns the
terminals, your sessions don't depend on your connection.

## Set it up

**1. Install Rakumux on the remote machine**

```bash theme={null}
ssh devbox
curl -fsSL https://rakumux.com/install.sh | PREFIX="$HOME/.local" bash
```

A user-local install lets Rakumux update itself without `sudo`. If `rakumux` isn't found
afterwards, open a new shell or add `~/.local/bin` to your `PATH`.

**2. Start your agents**

Run `rakumux` in a project, then start sessions and agents as usual. Install and sign in to your
agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, …) on this machine, as you would locally.

**3. Disconnect whenever you like**

Close the SSH connection or let it drop. Every session keeps running on the remote machine.

**4. Come back from anywhere**

SSH in again from any computer and run `rakumux`: the same sessions, still running.

## Tips for SSH

* **mosh** works too, and keeps your connection through network changes.
* **`rakumux attach <name>`** shows one session full screen without the list, which suits a small
  window or a slow link. `Ctrl-\` then `d` detaches.
* **Several logins at once** all see the same sessions: one window controls a session at a time, and
  the session takes the size of the window you're typing in.
* **Over SSH, `Esc` waits a moment** for the rest of a split escape sequence (an arrow key, for
  example); on a local terminal it's instant.
* **Copying a link:** in the sign-in dialog, `c` copies the sign-in link to your local clipboard
  (in terminals that let programs set it), so you can open it on the computer you're sitting at.

## Check on agents from your phone

* **In a browser.** Sign in on the remote machine (`a` in Rakumux mode) and turn on the
  [Feed](https://rakumux.com/docs/account/feed.md): rakumux.com then shows the machine's sessions and their chats, and you can
  write back to your agents. Nothing on the machine is exposed: it reaches out to rakumux.com.
* **In the app.** With [phone access](https://rakumux.com/docs/phone/remote-access.md), the Rakumux phone app connects to the
  remote machine over your own Tailscale network. You can see every session, read what each agent
  said, and type an answer, without opening a laptop.

## After a reboot

Sessions that were running come back the next time Rakumux starts on the machine: run `rakumux`, or
`rakumux daemon start` to bring them back without opening the UI. Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode
return to the same conversation ([Recovery](https://rakumux.com/docs/guides/recovery.md)).

## Keep it up to date

Update with `U` in Rakumux mode. Only the UI restarts; when a new version also changes the server,
Rakumux offers to restart the server **in place** (`S`), and your agents keep running through it.
