# AI session titles

> Sessions named by AI from what you asked their agent, for signed-in users.

Signed in to your [Rakumux account](https://rakumux.com/docs/account/sign-in.md), Rakumux names your sessions with AI: a short
title for what you asked the agent, like **Fix flaky login test**, in place of a generated name like
`brisk-otter`. Each agent chat gets one automatically, written from your message and the agent's
messages since, once the agent has written 5 messages or when it finishes its reply, whichever comes
first. After that a title changes only when you ask: hover over the session and click the **↻** after its
name, or select the session and press `s`. Other programs are named from their terminal output, only when
you ask.

A name you give a session yourself (`r`, `rakumux rename`, the local API or MCP) is kept: automatic
titles leave it alone, and only a title you ask for (**↻** or `s`) replaces it. A title another
session in the folder already has gets a number after it (` 2`). Older versions of Rakumux show a
short AI-written description under each session's name instead.

## Turn them on or off

AI session titles are **on by default** for signed-in users. Turn them off, or on again, in Rakumux
under **Settings → Available on sign-in → AI session titles** (greyed out until you sign in), or at
[rakumux.com/features](https://rakumux.com/features). Both change the same switch on your account,
so each shows what you set in the other, on every machine you're signed in on. Turned off in
Rakumux, sending stops at once on that machine, and within about two minutes on your others; turned
off on the website, within about two minutes. Signing out (`rakumux account logout`) stops it too.
Sessions keep the titles they already have.

## What's sent, and where

| | |
| - | - |
| **What** | The session's state (working, waiting for you or idle, for example), the agent's own short status report if it gave one, and up to 8 KB of text: for Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode, your last message and the agent's messages since (its reasoning, the tools it runs and its replies, never the tools' output), its newest 10 while it works and all of them that fit once it has replied; for other programs, the most recent terminal output |
| **Cleaned first** | On your machine, Rakumux removes text that looks like a password, token or key. This is best-effort, so it can miss some. |
| **When** | Once for each agent chat: when its agent has written 5 messages, or when it finishes its reply if that's sooner. After that, and for other programs, only when you ask (**↻** or `s`) |
| **Where** | To rakumux.com, which passes it through Vercel's AI Gateway to Anthropic's Claude to write the title (and the description older versions of Rakumux show) and returns them. What's sent, the title and the description aren't stored there; the title becomes the session's name on your computer. rakumux.com counts the titles each account asks for (at most 60 an hour and 300 a day), and deletes the counts after two days. |
| **Never** | Anything while you're signed out or have the feature off, and sessions marked private |

Change the 5 (`every_messages`: the messages before a chat's automatic title) and the 10
(`recent_messages`: the newest messages read) with `sessions.ai_summary` in
[`config.json`](https://rakumux.com/docs/reference/configuration); Rakumux reads it again every minute.

`rakumux account status` says whether they're on, with each live session's AI description. See the
[Privacy Policy](https://rakumux.com/privacy) for the full details.
